Does the system boot 2.6.10 now that you have edited /etc/modules?

Boot the system in recovery mode so that you can see which modules are being
loaded, and take note of the last one you see.

Did you try alt+sysrq+t or control+scrolllock as requested in
DebuggingSystemCrash?  These are a lower level mechanism than
control+alt+delete, and perform a different function.
