Thank you again for the assistance.

As far as capturing data goes, nothing seems to be written to the disk, so I
could try to write down some portion of what appears on the screen OR maybe I
could rig up a serial terminal and learn how to redirect the console to a serial
port. (Is that possible with the stock kernel?) I don't think that I have the
appropriate cables sitting around, so it might be asking for a lot.

I started commenting kernel modules and rebooting, and when I got to ide-cd, it
made it past "Loading modules..." and then it hung at "Starting Hotplug
Subsystem" -- that's ONLY having psmouse and mousedev uncommented in /etc/modules

Just for "fun" I commented everything out and it still hangs on "Starting
Hotplug Subsystem."

I don't know if any of the other startup messages will be helpful, but I'll type
them here.

this is where it hangs with everything in /etc/modules from ide-cd down
commented out.

Then suddenly after sitting still for over ten minutes it suddenly finished the
rest of the boot messages, and now I'm looking at a partial GNOME screen (the
panels haven't finished painting in). Oh, now (about 5 minutes later) it has a
GNOME message -- Question: The panel encountered a problem while loading
"OAFIID:GNOME_ShowDesktopApplet". Do you want to delete the applet from your
configuration? (I will say Don't Delete.)

So maybe I am powering it down too soon -- I'll restore /etc/modules and let it
sit for 10-15 minutes on the Loading Modules message, and see if I can get it to
finish booting well enough to capture a /var/log/kern.log

If it does load the modules after a long wait I will try to capture a log and
post an update here.

BTW it turns out I have a /var/log/kern.log from this last boot so I'll send that.
