Have you checked the temperature of the system to ensure that it is within the
normal range?  Does it happen after the system has been up for a certain amount
of time?

When you say that the window manager doesn't need to be started, do you mean
that it happens even if you don't login?  Does it happen when you boot in
recovery mode?
