           Summary: [Breezy] hangs at boot : unhappy with NIC
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: i386
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: kernel-package
        AssignedTo: fabbione at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: vincent.trouilliez at modulonet.fr
         QAContact: kernel-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

There was a kernel update a few hours ago, which introduced a problem...

at boot, the kernel seems unhappy with my generic 8139 Realtek based Ethernet
card, which never caused a problem in the past.
The following messages now appear at boot (taken from /var/log/dmesg) :

[4294669.162000] 8139cp: 10/100 PCI Ethernet driver v1.2 (Mar 22, 2004)
[4294669.162000] 8139cp: pci dev 0000:01:01.0 (id 10ec:8139 rev 10) is not an
8139C+ compatible chip
[4294669.162000] 8139cp: Try the "8139too" driver instead.
[4294669.163000] 8139too Fast Ethernet driver 0.9.27
[4294669.164000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNK2] enabled at IRQ 5
[4294669.164000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:01:01.0[A] -> Link [LNK2] -> GSI 5
(level, low) -> IRQ 5
[4294669.165000] eth0: RealTek RTL8139 at 0xc000, 00:4f:4e:0f:ea:9d, IRQ 5
[4294669.165000] eth0:  Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8139C'

After the first reboot (following the kernel update ie), this caused the
ethernet card to be disabled, hence no internet access. I went to
System->Administration->Networking to activate it, and the internet was working
again.
However, all the error messages still appear at boot, and more annoyingly, it
hangs for 22s (I timed it...) on the line that says "Try the "8139too" driver
instead"...

If I can send any log file or other info to help, just ask...
