I encountered the same problem after upgrading my kernel image just last August
20, 2005. I'm using Ubuntu Hoary x86. The kernel image entry was changed to
initrd.img-2.6.10.-5-386 in my /boot partition. Here's my partition setup on a
SATA drive:
/dev/sdb1 = /boot (ReiserFS)
/dev/sdb2 = swap
/dev/sdb3 = / (ReiserFS)
Here are some logs when booting up using Grub recovery mode:
VFS: Mounted root (cramfs filesystem) readonly.
VFS: Cannot open root device "sdb3" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
This is a very annoying problem (happened to me twice already on Ubuntu) and
gives an impression that upgrading Ubuntu is not really reliable. I do hope the
developers will address this as soon as possible and post workarounds on how to
recover from such problem.
