I've seen this affect before when the X server didn't support my laptop or LCD
screen properly. The screen starts getting really bright, and it almost looks
like it is going to permanently mess it up.

Some people have reported that getting the latest BIOS for their system helped.
Generally, the problems seem related to laptops and LCD screens on desktops.
Still looking at what exactly is the problem with 640x480-60 (which should work
on all VGA systems).
