Have this exact problem here with VMWare 5 running Breezy.

SCSI device listed in 'lspci' as:
0000:00:10.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X
Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI (rev 01)

Kernel 2.6.12-6-386 boots perfectly, 2.6.12-7-386 and 2.6.12-8-386 both fail to
mount /dev/sda1.
