I'm booting kernel 2.6.15-6-k7 and 2.6.15-6-i386 with the latest version of
dapper, and see the same behaviour with both.

When gdm starts, the mouse flips axes, with vertical movement becoming
horizontal, and horizontal movement vanishing until pressing and holding either
of the mouse buttons, where it then moves right.

The behaviour is not seen with 2.6.12-9-k7.
