Sadly, as there didn't seem to be any work-around for this issue, and as I was risking losing data from the 
raid array, I have been forced to pull the Promise cards and fit 2x SiL3114 cards.

I'm happy to donate the 4x Promise cards to anyone who can use them to look at this (and other) issues. As 
even Breezy had the startup script order such that software raid on SATA would not remount on a reboot, I 
suspect that SATA s/w raid isn't a case that gets much regular test coverage.

Really sorry I can't regression test this. Unless I can find some spare SATA drives somewhere.
