Here the dmesg you requested .
You can see the Alps touchpad is detected correctly.
Looking at alps.c in the kernel source it looks like it detects correctly my
touchpad but doesn't reconise the type and therfore gives the psmouse default 3
button when I should have 5.
While messing about I've also found out that if the standard psmouse is not
configured in xorg.conf then the touchpad doesn't function though it looks like
it should.
I wonder if this is why so many people seem to be have problems?.
I also think people should be using the auto-dev option (in synaptics xorg
stanza) as then if the event handler moves (extra input device attached) the
auto-dev will still attach to the correct handler.
