A quick update: I can sidestep this bug by doing the following:

1) Go to http://archive.ubuntulinux.org/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-source-2.6.12/
and download linux-image-2.6.12-3-amd64-generic_2.6.12-3.2_amd64.deb

2) Go to http://archive.ubuntulinux.org/ubuntu/pool/main/i/initrd-tools/ and
download initrd-tools_0.1.78ubuntu2_all.deb

3) Run these two commands:
   dpkg --install initrd-tools_0.1.78ubuntu2_all.deb
   dpkg --install linux-image-2.6.12-3-amd64-generic_2.6.12-3.2_amd64.deb

4) Reboot in the new kernel, make sure the NIC is set up correctly.

This doesn't fix the bug, since the problem still remains that the current
LiveCD and InstallCD do not handle this NIC properly with the default kernel,
but at least there is a workaround.
