I'd just like to say I also have problems using an Edirol UA-5. Here's my .asoundrc:

Here's what happens when I try to play an mp3 with mplayer:
MPlayer 1.0pre6-3.3.5 (C) 2000-2004 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Xeon/Celeron Northwood (Family: 8, Stepping: 4)

Note, mplayer *will* play an mp3 through m ylogitech USB headset. What's going on?
The card is recognised:
blrich at blackwell:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards

EDIROL UA-5 at usb-0000:00:03.1-2, full speed
Yet it won't work with any applications.
