i had this exact same problem when i tried to install the linux-686 package.
the above edit of the "mkinitrd.conf" file enabled me to now install the new
kernel with no errors. but this is clearly an issue, since i have a completely
"vanilla" hoary install, except for the fact that i am running software raid 1
with dual serial ata drives, which could be the problem. please investigate.
