After two cdrecord failures I've had one success.  This was achieved by
booting using the `Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.10-5-386 (recovery mode)' grub
menu item to get a root shell and doing the cdrecord from there.  There
were no other differences.

So this may be a workaround;  it would be nice if someone else confirms
it works for them.

This suggests the problem may be part of Gnome, e.g. HAL or
gnome-volume-manager(1), interfering with the SCSI device once cdrecord
starts to write to the CD because it thinks a CD is now present instead
of a blank CD-R.  (If I knew a safe way to kill off all the various bits
of Gnome that have something to do with this I'd give it a try.)
