Yes, I altered the configuration. Please read my original post. I altered the 
configuration to enable suspend, since a laptop which doesn't suspend isn't
worth much. Closing the lid does indeed result in the sleep light coming on,
as it should. It also beeps as it should. Ditto for CTRL+F4. All looks normal,
and when I trigger a wakeup, either by opening the lid or CTRL+F4 again, the
system does indeed wakeup in a normal fashion, with some beeps, hard drive
spinning up, and so forth. But X does not restart (blank screen), and there 
is no response to any keyboard input (not even CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE does anything).
So I have to power cycle the machine to force a reboot.  

Suggestions are welcome, thx.

P.S. Suspend worked fine in Gentoo 2.6.5 with APM, on this same laptop.
