It is an odd thing to have pings push through and nothing else, I agree, but
there is no firewall of which I am aware, unless Ubuntu (Live CD and install)
implements one by default, which would be a bug of a different sort.
At first, I though it was the hardware firewall (nVidia's nForce4 chipset
includes a hardware firewall on the MoBo) but when Fedora worked out of the box,
that theory got tossed.
Since both are connecting through the same cable, port, hub, and router any
firewall at that level would affect both Fedora and Ubuntu the same. I figured
that this was an issue that is specific to Ubuntu, once I saw that a clean
install of FC3 worked and a clean install of Ubuntu didn't (at least in terms of
the NIC). For both installs, I accepted the defaults all the way through
(except for the disk partitioning) and of course, for the Live CD there are not
options but the defaults.
Are there any further details I can collect to help clarify the problem? I can
boot from the Live Cd to get more data as needed.
