noapic has already been tried and tested - see my comments 16/17 above.

Forgot to mention that right after "Starting Ubuntu..." on startup, I get:
stopping tasks failed (1 tasks remaining)

And in dmesg:

 stopping tasks failed (1 tasks remaining)
