Which kernel is this for? I am using 2.6.11-1-686-smp. Can I get an initrd image
with the new module in it? 

I tried:
# fsck.cramfs -x /tmp/initrd /boot/initrd-img-2.6.11-1-686-smp
# cp aic7xxx.ko
/tmp/initrd/lib/modules/2.6.11-1-686-smp/kernel/drivers/scsi/aic7xxx/aic7xxx.ko
# mkcramfs /boot/initrd-img-2.6.11-1-686-smp /tmp/initrd

And I get:
FATAL: Error inserting aic7xxx
(/lib/modules/2.6.11-1-686-smp/kernel/drivers/scsi/aix7xxx/aic7xxx.ko): Invalid
module format
pivot_root: No such file or directory
/sbin/init: 428: cannot open dev/console: No such file
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
