The Warty live CD uses a different kernel (based on 2.6.7) than any other
official Ubuntu CD; that explains why it exhibits different behaviour.

The Hoary live and install CDs use identical kernels, so I wouldn't expect a
Hoary live CD to work for you if the corresponding install CD doesn't.

Since this problem seems to be specific to your machine, please give us more
information about it.  The following would be helpful:

- dmidecode output
- lspci output
- lsusb output
