Summary: kernel panic after upgrade: /sbin/init: 395: arith:
syntax error: "0xv/hda5"
Product: Ubuntu
Version: unspecified
Platform: i386
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P1
Component: linux
AssignedTo: fabbione at ubuntu.com
ReportedBy: hulksam at yahoo.com
QAContact: kernel-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com
I have ubuntu hoary installed on a pentium 4 with hyperthreading and so I use
the 686-smp kernel. It is a dual boot system with ubuntu on hda1, windows on
hda2 and the swap on hda5. I updated my system with the security patches from 2
days ago, whcih included a new kernel and several other things, which I forgot
(and don't know how to see them again). Since then I am not able to boot my
computer any more. I get grub and can select linux but then, just after reaching
"Starting Ubuntu" I get the following error message:
/sbin/init: 395: arith: syntax error: "0xv/hda5"
kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
(where hda5 is my swap partition). This error message is different from the
other posts in the forum concerning kernel panics after the update since I get
an other error message.
With the live-cd I was able to install different kernels (as the standard 386
kernel and the 2.6.11 kernel, which displayed well in grub but gave the same
error message in the end.
Another suggestion in the posts was to make sure initrd-tools is installed but
this is the case. Somewhere else I read that using the initrd-tools from the
breezy badger repositories solved the problem for them but they got a different
error message and not everybody got good results with that, so I didn't do that
so far.
By the way, I am still able to boot windows.
Thank you in advance.
Sam.
