Summary: unneccessary libata loading causes problems
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: i386
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: linux
        AssignedTo: ben.collins at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: Nikolaus at rath.org
         QAContact: kernel-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

The kernel currently uses libata to speak to my IDE controller. Unfortunately
this is not neccessary at all, because it's not an SATA controller. But I get
all the bad effects:

 - The CDROM only works in PIO mode
 - Harddisc spindown is impossible

I didn't even found a kernel commandline switch to deactivate libata, I had to
built my own kernel. I think this situation is really unfortunate. There are
probably many people like me who don't even now that their laptop is fully
supported when libata is turned off.
