Some more info:

I have just tried another Live Linux CD on the system and got the same result.
It was Slax (http://slax.linux-live.org/) a live CD version of Slackware Linux
which also uses X.Org.

I ran a script called xconf that created an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

When running startx, the system rebooted.

It looks like the issue is with X.Org and not with Ubuntu specifically - either
there is no support for the chipset or it is being incorrectly detected (not
sure if Ubuntu's Live CD has it's own graphic chipset detection scripts or uses
routines from X.org).

I guess this needs reporting to x.org.
