If you are using Gnome-Terminal, you can turn off the terminal bell in the preferences, which allows you to press TAB 
without crashing your machine.

To prevent Gnome from crashing, do the following:
- Follow Ludovic's instructions to get a working gdm login screen
- Log into a "Failsafe Terminal" session
- start gconf-editor, look for "Sound Server Startup" and turn it off.
- You can now log into an default gnome session.
