I confirm this bug on a breezy system upgraded to latest dapper modulo the new
kernel 2.6.15, i.e. I'm running linux-image-2.6.12-10-686. With the -9 this
doesn't happen but its initramfs hasn't been regenerated since breezy came out.
So I don't think it is a kernel problem but rather a usplash and/or initramfs
problem. I'll add more info later when I reboot my machine and do some
experimentations.
