Not reproducible here, on a ThinkPad T42.  Someone able to reproduce this
problem needs to help us debug it, or it won't be possible to find the cause.

potpal:[~] sudo hdparm -tT /dev/hda # before login

/dev/hda:
 Timing cached reads:   1516 MB in  2.00 seconds = 756.60 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:   66 MB in  3.07 seconds =  21.47 MB/sec
potpal:[~] sudo hdparm -tT /dev/hda # after login

/dev/hda:
 Timing cached reads:   1656 MB in  2.00 seconds = 827.30 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:   72 MB in  3.01 seconds =  23.94 MB/sec
