When booting (kernel 2.6.12-9-386) there is no error message as such.

On the graphical splash screen I get: 'Loading ACPI modules'

Then the screen switches to text mode and I get: 'Loading ACPI modules ...     
         y ...               [ok]'

And then the computer hangs at this point.
