Hmm - maybe that's the problem. I downloaded a small inotify "test" from
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-inotify.html#download

This [Along with the absence of /dev/inotify and anything relating to inotify in
my dmesg] that I don't have inotify - could/would that cause the problem?

My test program [attached] gives:
$ ./inotify_test /home/lee
open("/dev/inotify", O_RDONLY) = : No such file or directory
No inotify
