It boots fine with the smp kernel with acpi=off

I did just notice that, booted like this, only 1 CPU is listed in /proc/cpuinfo.
 I'm used to seeing 2, one of which I know to be the virtual hyperthreaded cpu.
 Has this behaviour changed, or is this a clue?
