More interestingly, can I get the output of:

ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.12-9-k7/volatile/
ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.12-9-k7/

If modprobe isn't resolving ath_pci -> ath_hal, that sounds like another "depmod
is messing with me" bug.  Does it work properly if you run "depmod -a"? 
(please, do so after giving me the above output)
