That it was a zombie was a misunderstanding from me.  I just assumed that since
I knew that its parent was dead.  SIGCONT helps for me as well.  You learn
something new every day :-).

One data point (which you may or may not find interesting) is that on Redhat's
"Advanced Server" and "Enterprize Linux" releases, my program does *not* leave
any process behind.  On Fedora Core 4 it does though.

So different versions of the kernel seems to handle this case differently.

If the correct result of running my program is up for debate (is it?), I'd vote
for having it not leaving the process behind.  Even if it is killable using
SIGCONT, at least I was obviously confused by having a program that I couldn't
get rid of either by kill -9 or by kill -9 of its parent.
