I really wonder if it makes a differenence if it is run inside synaptic or from
apt-get. 

The processes don't go away I assume? 

What happens if you run:
$ sudo /usr/bin/perl /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-2.6.12-9-686.postinst
configure 2.6.12-9.21


Does that hang too (in a normal termianl)?
