I've got the same bug :)
I've got the same soundcard (ES1978 Maestro 2E) and a Sweex Wifi Usb Adaptor. 
The sound is perfect as long as the USB adaptor isn't plugged, but when it is,
my sound start to garble.
I believe the bug is in the kernel because aplay also doesn't work well.
