Summary: VMWare is broken by Breezy
Product: Ubuntu
Version: unspecified
Platform: i386
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: kernel-package
AssignedTo: ben.collins at ubuntu.com
ReportedBy: fargher at gmail.com
QAContact: kernel-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com
VMWare 5 worked fine in Hoary but Breezy breaks it. The problem is the
inconsistency in use of gcc-4, as reported by the vmware-config utility, viz:
"Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "3.4.5", while you are trying to use
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.0.2". This configuration is not supported and VMware
Workstation cannot work in such configuration. Please either recompile your
kernel with "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.0.2", or restart
/usr/local/bin/vmware-config.pl with CC environment variable pointing to the
"gcc" version "3.4.5"."
gcc-3.4.5 is unavailable in the Ubuntu repositories, only 3.4.4 is available.
Using it to compile the needed VMWare kernel modules doesn't work; they compile
and load into the kernel but VMWare doesn't run.
