Summary: the tg3 module crashes the computer (kernel panic) when
                    ifup'ing
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: i386
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: kernel-package

Hi,

When my machine boots (hp compaq nc6000 with a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme
BCM5705M_2 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 03) nic) it loads the tg3 driver for the nic.
Because at home and the places I connected to, I had wifi, I din't experience
this problem.

Whenever you do an "ifup eth0" to get an ip though dhcp, the machine crashes
with a kernel panel. The error you see is a segmentation error in
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient-script (or /etc/dhclient-script when using the dhcp-client
package).

The nic worked fine when using the HP-ized custom ubuntu build. However, I don't
remember wich kernel module it used.

I tried to compile the bcm5700-source package, but I fail. I guess because it
comes directly from Debian and there are difference in the name of the kernel. A
quick edit of the Makefile didn't do the trick, so I decided to build the source
from broadcom itself. It built fine and is working ok. I unload the tg3 module
with a init script, so there is no clash.

I consider this problem critical of major because there is no way a normal user
can debug the problem (Makefile? Module?) or compile a new driver. I am sure a
lot op people are buying HP laptops because they work great with ubuntu (like
said everying worked out of the box with customized hp build of hoary).

Contact me if you need more info.

Claudio
