When using the radeonfb the PC randomly locks up hard.

This has been tracked down to the DynamicClocks powersave-feature off the driver.
This bug is know in both the Xorg radeon driver and the kernels radeonfb driver.
Fixed in both.

Please create patched with the fix.

As of kernel 2.6.13 this bug was fixed.
