I'v the same problem on a Sony VGN-A series notebook.Rebooting also worked in
hoary but never in breezy.
The only solution i've found is adding nolapic in the kernel parameters(in
/boot/grub/menu.lst kernel section) likes this:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-9-686 root=/dev/hda1 ro quiet nolapic splash
With this my notebook works fine halt/reboot.But 1)It's note standard in breezy
and after each kernel upgrade you must reenter the nolapic instruction
2)It's probably a kernel bug with acpi table, not specificly ubuntu bug.
It's just a temporary solution
