Thank you.. That solved my problem...

More detailed instructions:
edit /etc/mkinitrd/modules, 

Add the lines
piix
ide-generic

then run  
mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-XXX /lib/modules/2.6.XXXXXXX

Then update your grub.conf to point to the new initrd image.

For the record, this on an ICH3 chipset (revision 2) according to the kernel
boot logs
