Summary: connection properties dialog has incorrect information
Product: Ubuntu
Version: unspecified
Platform: i386
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: linux
AssignedTo: ben.collins at ubuntu.com
ReportedBy: dooglus at gmail.com
QAContact: kernel-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com
If I right-click on the gnome netstatus applet in the top right of the screen, I
can select 'properties' to see a real-time display of the amount that has been
uploaded and downloaded.
The numbers shown aren't correct, however. Whenever they get to 4Gb they wrap
back to zero without any warning. I can currently see that I have received 22
million packets and 10 megabytes. If that's true then the average packet size
was half a byte... I see the same from 'ifconfig'.
It turns out that /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.12/include/linux/netdevice.h defines
the counter of 'total bytes received' like this:
unsigned long rx_bytes;
which limits it to a 32 bit value. Is there any reason not to use a "long long"
(64 bit) value instead? 4Gb isn't very much with today's network speeds.
