I am the original bug reporter. I have no finally found out what the problem was:

For a while, I experimented with the bootchart package from dapper. I uninstalled it a long time ago, but only recently discovered that it pulled in dapper's version of libklibc and klibc-utils. After downgrading those to breezy, the problem went away.
