To be a little more informative i've decided to take a look at diff -u config-2.6.15-20-386 config-2.6.15-20-k7. Luckily these configs don't differ that much, and my first notice was that the -k7 kernel has 
CONFIG_SMP=y. Package descripion says it's SMP/UP so it was not a big discovery :), however when i compile the kernel without smp support, it works.
