I attached a patch which should solve the problem to the bug duplicate 38238 (https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/38238)
(sorry for ignoring the duplicate bug indicator on top of it).

The patch simply removes the PCI device ID of the old card (0x3890) from the module device table, so hotplug does no longer consider islsm_pci to be responsible for the old card.

It could also be necessary to remove the device IDs from the newer cards vicevers from the old driver (especially the 3886 device), not included in my patch -- but a similar change to the islpci_hotplug.c file of the drivers/net/wireless/prism54 subdir.

And if the prism54_softmac driver should be usefull please include the firmware images mentioned at
 http://jbnote.free.fr/prism54usb/
in the linux-restricted-modules package.
