Modules being loaded do not constitute alsa thinking that the device
exists. Most modules (and these are included) are hotplug aware, which
means the module can be loaded, and no devices exist, until inserted.
So the only thing that needs to happen is that the driver/module just
needs to remove it's internal reference to the device. Nothing more
needs to happen.
