Another obvious workaround, for anyone affected ... install the
following packages:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/u/udev/libvolumeid0_093-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/u/udev/volumeid_093-0ubuntu9_i386.deb
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/u/udev/udev_093-0ubuntu9_i386.deb

(replace i386 with your architecture if different)
