I made a small mistake in my previous comment. It's SiS SI7012, not
S17012.

Here's the possibly related bugs I mentioned:
- Bug #47221 SiS 7012 doesn't work
- Bug #26376 SiS 7012 chip Breezy: Sound works fine but volume can only be set to mute or 100%
- Bug #26637 SiS driver performance regression with linux-image-2.6.15-7-686
- Bug #52319 Sound Card on Haier H51 laptop is recognised, but not functional.

I left a comment on each one to try the workaround described here.
