I'm another one living in fear; it hasn't happened yet, but a resolution
on this would be nice.

My setup is:
Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A09
Dapper, 2.6.15-23-386, on Insprion 6400

Could it be BIOS version dependent?

I noticed over on the ubuntu forums, there is a thread, but nobody seems
to have  heard about the issue.
