[Bug 48552] WiFi does not work after upgrading Breezy -> Dapper

Public bug reported:

I have just upgraded from Breezy to Dapper on my two laptops (AJP M3000N
-- rebadged Asus, and Sony Vaio PCG-463M). Both have built in WiFi
which seemed to work perfectly with Breezy. Now having upgraded to
Dapper, the WiFi is not working.

WIth the interface down, the interface monitor on the panel reports an
excellent signal (91-100%). As soon as I try to bring up the interface
the signal strength monitor goes to zero with a red blob and no packets
are transferred so the DHCP fails. If I bring the interface down the
monitor reports excellent signal again.

iwlist on the AJP reports:

Quality: 78 Signal level: 0 Noise level: 0

which is strange. The Vaio does not support scanning.

On the Vaio machine I kept kernel 2.6.12-10 and tried booting that and
the WiFi works fine -- though X does not so I have to use a console not
Gnome.

So it is clearly something associated with the 2.6.15-23 kernel that
comes with Dapper that is the problem. Also it must be something fairly
generic as I get the same behaviour on two different machines.

This problem is really rather critical for me as it means networking is
impossible.

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Medium
         Status: Needs Info
