Please try booting to single user to see if the crash still occurs. We need to find out where this is happening. If it does not occur in single user, please switch to console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) as soon as gdm starts, and wait to see if the machine still locks up.

Does it happen at the GDM login, or does it only happen after you actually login?
