Just BTW:  I've loaded a new system for myself, this time using a
gigabyte GA-8I945G motherboard with a 930 CPU (instead of the MSI with
830cpu) and all the 5.10 breezy smp kernels work (ie _both_ CPUs show up
in top and nothing hangs),  so the above problem seems to be limited to
the MSI (BIOS?) and can wait till dapper (cos the MSI worked with flight
2).
