I checked the linux-scsi mailing list and there is a lot of recent
patching activity going on regarding both the aic79xx and aic7xxx
drivers. This is driven by similar lockups with cd-rw as the ones
reported here.

So it appears that patience is called for and I will be unable to
upgrade from breezy to dapper. Bummer!
