I am also getting this bug.  
I am going to work on this tonight.  Going to try asking on the #ubuntu irc channel if I have trouble.

I burned a live CD.  Unfornanatly I did not have another kernel on the
system to boot from.

I managed to boot a bit ferther by editing the grub lines and getting
rid of the splash option upon boot

I know that the /etc/fstab is missing from the initrd image.
To get going at all I managed to pivot_root, chroot mount but 
could not exec init to restart from that point.

root=/dev/mapper/Ubuntu-root

All this from apt-get dist-upgrade

The initrd  image is smaller then what I am use to.
